On Feb. 28, Sony Playstation 3 owners woke up to what many expected out of the Y2K bug a decade ago. Gamers found that the older models of the PS3 refused to connect to the Playstation Network, and had reset their calendars to “12/31/1999.”
For 24 hours, affected users were also unable to play PS3 games, use dynamic themes, or view their trophy list. Sony made several statements regarding the crisis, pinpointing the problem as the internal system clock incorrectly recognizing the year 2010 as a leap year. Functionality was restored late Monday.
The rebranded “slimline” PS3 models were unaffected by the calendar bug. Gamers have humorously dubbed the event as the “ApocalyPS3.”
The older models that were affected are no longer in production, but it remains to be seen how this round of bad press will affect the PS3 brand.
